Skin care is important year round, however, the seasons affect the skin in different ways. Oil tends to build up on the skin during warm summer months, causing skin flare-ups and blemishes. On the other hand, cool fall weather can dry and irritate the skin. Fortunately, making changes to your beauty regimen can help keep your skin beautiful and healthy through the seasonal transition. In this blog post, Dr. Francis Johns of Artisan Plastic Surgery shares his favorite summer-to-fall skin-care tips.
Change Your Moisturizer
Your light, sheer summer moisturizer simply won’t do for the fall season. Colder weather means drier skin, so it’s time to use a heavier, thicker moisturizer. A heavy cream or oil-based serum with vitamins A and C can hydrate your skin and repair summer sun damage. Remember to moisturize your entire body, especially the face, neck, and hands, which receive daily sun exposure.
Keep Wearing Sunscreen
A rule of thumb: you should always use sunscreen, even when it’s overcast. The sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays can penetrate clouds and still reach your skin. What’s more, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can reflect off of snow and other shiny surfaces and reach your skin, meaning you’re still at risk for sunburns even during fall and winter months. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.
Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliating can repair skin damage caused by the summer sun by removing dead cells and unclogging the pores. A gentle facial scrub can brighten, smoothen and even out skin tone. Remember to exfoliate your skin before putting on any makeup, moisturizer or sunscreen. It’s recommended you exfoliate only once or twice a week to avoid unnecessary skin irritation.
Protect Your Lips
The arrival of fall is the perfect time to swap your lip gloss for lip balm. Cold, windy weather can make the lips look and feel dry and flaky. Avoid chapped lips by using a balm that both protects and hydrates. Remember to apply lip balm as soon as you get out of the shower in the morning and right before you fall asleep at night. This ensures your lips will look beautiful and healthy all day long. Remember to also pack your balm in your bag so you’re prepared for the fall and winter weather at all times.
Renew Your Skin
If you are seeing visible signs of sun damage or premature aging, consider having a skin rejuvenation treatment this fall with Dr. Francis Johns. Laser skin resurfacing can remove dull, aged skin to reveal a new, healthy layer of skin, while chemical peel can improve the texture of your skin for a brighter, renewed appearance.
