Are you embarrassed by small breasts that are disproportionate to the rest of your figure?
Do you hate trying on clothing because tops and bathing suits don’t look right on your bust?
Is it difficult to find a bra that fits both of your breasts properly?
If you agree with any of these statements, you may want to explore your breast augmentation surgery options with Pittsburgh/Greensburg breast implants surgeon Dr. Francis Johns. Breast implants will give you fuller, more voluptuous breasts and greater confidence in your body.
Breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of naturally small or asymmetrical breasts, or breasts that have lost volume due to weight fluctuation, pregnancy, nursing, aging or other factors.
In addition to the physical improvements of breast augmentation in Pittsburgh, many women experience psychological benefits, too. It’s common for a woman with breast implants to enjoy increased self-esteem and feel confident that her shapely breasts are proportional to her frame and look more attractive in blouses, dresses and bikini tops.
Women interested in breast augmentation should meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon to evaluate their candidacy and discuss the procedure and implant options in detail. Dr. Johns encourages breast augmentation candidates in Pittsburgh and Greensburg to schedule a consultation to determine whether the procedure is suitable for their needs.
In general, breast augmentation candidates are individuals who:
Currently, the FDA has approved the use of saline implants for women over the age of 18, and silicone implants for women over the age of 22 (or 18 if they are breast reconstruction candidates).
If Dr. Johns has deemed you an appropriate candidate for breast augmentation, the next step is to schedule your surgery and make some important choices about it. Together, you and Dr. Johns will review your options regarding:
When making his professional recommendations about your breast implants and procedural details, Dr. Johns will take into account factors that are unique to you, such as your body type and your desired surgical outcome. Then, he will suggest the course of treatment that will best meet your needs.
Dr. Johns recommends you research these options prior to meeting with him so you can ask questions during your consultation. Learn more about your breast implant options.
Once your surgery date has been scheduled, Dr. Johns will give you thorough pre-operative instructions and guidelines. He will ask you to:
Dr. Johns may also ask you to have a mammogram before surgery to detect any abnormalities in your breast tissue.
When preparing for breast augmentation, you should also arrange for someone to drive you home from surgery and stay overnight with you.
Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis at a local surgery center. Anesthesia will be administered for your comfort, and your vitals will be monitored for your safety.
Dr. Johns will follow the pre-determined surgical plan. He will make the surgical incisions either around the areola, underneath the breast crease or within the armpit. Through the incisions, he will create pockets within the breast tissue and carefully insert the implants. If Dr. Johns is using saline implants, he will first insert the empty shells and then slowly fill the implants with the saline solution to the desired capacity. Silicone implants come pre-filled. When he’s finished placing the implants, he will close the incisions with sutures, apply surgical dressings and place a support bra around the breasts.
Immediately after your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery suite and observed for a short period of time. Then, you’ll be released into the care of your companion, who should drive you home and help you get into a comfortable position on your couch or in bed. You should plan to take approximately one week off from work and your normal routine, and spend most of your time resting and relaxing.
Breast swelling, bruising, tenderness and numbness are common after breast augmentation; luckily, these side effects will gradually subside. Dr. Johns can prescribe oral medication to ease any post-operative pain or discomfort.
You should avoid any strenuous activity, including bending and lifting, during your initial recovery period. Gentle walking is encouraged to decrease the risk of developing blood clots.
Dr. Johns will schedule several follow-up appointments with you to check your healing progress, answer your questions and clear you to return to work, exercise and your normal activities. Everyone recovers at a different pace, and there is no rush to go back to work if your body isn’t feeling ready. The most important recovery guideline is to follow all of Dr. Johns’ instructions and contact him if you have any concerns.
