What Are the Benefits of Body Contouring?

After major weight loss, and as we lose skin elasticity as we age, it can be challenging for the skin to retract, resulting in loose, sagging tissue that detracts from the results. This, paired with stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to budge, results in loosely defined arms and legs. Body contouring surgery is a custom procedure that allows Dr. Johns to remove excess skin and fat from the arms and thighs, revealing an attractive, toned contour. Other benefits of body contouring include:

  • Slimmer, more defined upper arms and/or upper thighs
  • Increased comfort during physical activity
  • Improved skin irritations caused by loose skin
  • Smoother, more contoured arms and thighs
  • Increased clothing options
  • Enhanced self-confidence

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Body Contouring?

The ideal body contouring candidate is someone who is at or near their goal weight but is left with loose, sagging skin around their upper arms and/or upper thighs. They may also have a few remaining pockets of fat in these areas. Ideal body contouring candidates:

  • Are not smokers or are willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations for results
  • Wish to remove hanging skin
  • Want an overall toned and tightened appearance to the thighs and arms

Body contouring is an ideal procedure for individuals who have reached their goal weight after undergoing bariatric surgery, using GLP-1s, or through diet and exercise, and who are left with excess skin. This procedure is not intended to be a weight loss solution; it is the step after weight loss to reveal the toned, slim physique underneath.

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for body contouring is to call Artisan Plastic Surgery at (724) 830-9305 or complete the contact form to schedule a consultation with Dr. Johns.

How Is Body Contouring Performed?

Your Body Contouring Consultation

The first step in your body contouring process is to schedule a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Johns. During this meeting, Dr. Johns’ priority is to listen to your goals and discover the best course of action to help you meet them. His approach to consultations relies on allowing the patient to explore their own ideas and expectations for aesthetic improvement without imparting his personal opinions. This low-pressure approach yields better communication, a more relaxed environment, and a significantly improved patient experience.

You can use this time to ask any questions you have about the procedure steps, results, and recovery. Dr. Johns will provide you with all the necessary information to make an informed decision about your procedure. If you both agree that body contouring is right for you, Dr. Johns will create a customized surgical plan that incorporates the steps to your surgery. Then, he will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

Body Contouring Procedure Steps

Body contouring procedures are highly customized to meet the individual needs of each patient. In some cases, it includes skin tightening and removal in the upper arms, thighs, or both. Some patients may request combining one or more procedures with another body contouring surgery, such as a tummy tuck. Dr. Johns will help you determine the best combination of procedures for you and your goals during your consultation. Generally, however, a body contouring procedure may look as follows:

The procedure may be performed as an outpatient procedure, or you may need to stay overnight at Dr. Johns’ state-of-the-art ambulatory center in Greensburg, PA. General anesthesia will be used for your comfort. For the treatment of the arms, Dr. Johns will make a vertical incision underneath the arm, just below the armpit. Through this incision, he will remove excess pockets of fat, tighten loose muscles, and remove excess skin.

For the thighs, the incision may vary depending on the amount of necessary revision, but he commonly uses one of three incision types: an outer thigh incision extends around the hip at the belt line, an inner thigh incision right near the groin, and a vertical incision made from the groin to the knee. Each incision type is ideal for different needs. Dr. Johns will tighten loose skin and tissues, remove excess skin, and remove pockets of fat for a smoother contour.

Once Dr. Johns is pleased with the results, he will close the incisions with sutures.

Body Contouring Recovery & Aftercare

Body Contouring Recovery Process

Patients will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort following their body contouring procedure. Dr. Johns will require you to wear a compression garment over the treated areas to help reduce swelling and promote skin retraction after surgery. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least three weeks, while light walking is encouraged as soon as you feel able to increase blood circulation. Dr. Johns will provide you with specific aftercare instructions and is available to answer any questions during your recovery.

Body Contouring Results

Body contouring results help reveal the hard work of your weight loss journey, revealing the tightened, toned contours underneath. Patients can wear short sleeves and shorter pants and dresses without worrying about hiding loose skin. This procedure improves self-confidence as much as it does aesthetics, as patients are able to enjoy their slimmed bodies after massive weight loss.
