The Art of Looking Forever Refreshed.

Personalized & Refined

The nose is the center point of the face, so when patients are unhappy with its size or shape, it can lead to dissatisfaction with their overall appearance. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, can correct this problem by reshaping a nose that is disproportionate to the other facial features. Even subtle changes to the nose can have a dramatic impact on a patient’s appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Living with a nose that doesn’t suit your face can be challenging, while a nose that is in proportion to the rest of the face can drastically improve your overall facial aesthetic and greatly increase your self-confidence. Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic and functional procedure that offers a number of benefits, including:

  • Creates facial symmetry
  • Can remove bumps or crookedness
  • Corrects the size so that it is in proportion with other facial features
  • Can correct breathing problems
  • Enhances self-confidence

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a unique procedure because it is routinely performed on younger patients, typically those over the age of fifteen, once the nose is fully developed. While it is commonly performed on young patients, rhinoplasty can also be performed on adults of all ages who are unhappy with the size, shape, or symmetry of their nose. Additionally, those who have functional issues such as difficulty breathing may benefit from rhinoplasty. Ideal rhinoplasty candidates:

  • Are over the age of 15 or have a fully developed nose
  • Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations for results

Rhinoplasty patients must also be prepared for the emotional changes that come with cosmetic surgery. While all aesthetic surgery prompts a period of adjustment for the patient, rhinoplasty may be more so, as even tiny changes to the nose can have a huge impact on the rest of the face. Even if a patient loves their new appearance, it can take some getting used to. Dr. Johns will discuss all of these factors with you during your consultation.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Johns is the first step in the rhinoplasty process. He will listen to your concerns and issues you’d like to address with surgery, as well as what you envision for your results. Based on these factors, Dr. Johns will suggest the ideal approach. It’s also important to ask any questions you may have and listen to Dr. Johns’ recommendations. You’ll also get a good idea about what you can expect from the rhinoplasty procedure, recovery, and results.

If you and Dr. Johns decide that rhinoplasty is the ideal procedure for you, he will create a surgical plan that details the unique steps of your procedure before providing you with an accurate cost estimate.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure Steps

Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis at Artisan Plastic Surgery’s state-of-the-art surgical center in Greensburg, PA. The length of the procedure will vary based on the extent of changes being made. Dr. Johns can perform rhinoplasty using either the open or the closed technique, each of which has its own distinct benefits. During closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose and therefore do not leave any external scarring. During the open rhinoplasty procedure, an additional incision is made across the columella. Although this leaves a small scar under the nose, it is the preferred procedure when patients require extensive changes. This is because the additional incision gives Dr. Johns more access to the nasal bone and tissue.

After the incisions have been made, Dr. Johns makes any necessary adjustments to the nose, which may include removing and rearranging nasal tissue and/or altering the bone in the nose. Once this is complete, he inserts a nasal splint to help retain the results of the procedure.

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare

The recovery period for rhinoplasty will vary from patient to patient based on the extent of changes made to the nose. Most patients who undergo nose surgery in Pittsburgh will experience some minor discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the days after surgery. Dr. Johns will prescribe medication to alleviate any of these symptoms and promote a safe and comfortable recovery period. Patients are encouraged to keep their heads elevated as much as possible for the 48 hours after treatment.

Nasal packing and splints will be removed about one week after surgery, at which time patients can return to work and other routine activities. More strenuous activities and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks after treatment. Although some results from rhinoplasty surgery are apparent immediately, it can take up to a year for the nose to take its final form.

Once your nose is fully healed, you can enjoy a more proportionate result that serves as the ideal central feature of your face, providing facial balance.
