Mini facelifts are a great solution for patients with select facial aging concerns and who want a shorter surgical duration and recovery period. This blog is dedicated to mini facelifts: what they are, what they can treat, who should get one, how they differ from other facelifts, and whether they’re worth it.

As we age, our skin begins to lose elasticity, collagen production slows, and sun and environmental damage take their toll. It’s not uncommon for people to start to experience signs of aging around the jawline, cheeks, and mouth as early as their mid-30s. In fact, everyone ages at different rates due to genetics, their environment, and lifestyle factors.

If you are experiencing loose skin around the jawline, jowls, or sagging in the lower third of your face, you might be a candidate for a mini facelift.

A mini facelift is a facial rejuvenation procedure that, contrary to its name, provides complete rejuvenating results to a localized area of the face. It’s a complete surgery—it’s just focused on the lower third of the face, lifting the lower cheeks and jowls, and smoothing the upper portion of the neck. People who undergo a mini facelift typically have signs of aging only in these areas, often complaining of a “double chin” (that is actually skin laxity under the jawline), a loss of facial definition, and loose skin.

What Is the Difference Between a Mini Facelift and Other Facelifts?

The difference between a mini facelift and a traditional (full) facelift lies in the scope of the procedure, its duration, and the areas treated. Here’s a simple comparison of the two procedures:

Mini FaceliftTraditional Facelift
Tightens the jawline, chin, and lower cheeksTreats the jawline, chin, full cheeks, and neck
Short incision behind the earsSlightly longer incisions behind the ears
Shorter recovery periodMore extensive recovery

A mini facelift provides more moderate results in a select area, primarily focusing on the jawline, jowls, and part of the upper neck, whereas a traditional facelift treats these same areas with more extensive revision of the neck and the nasolabial folds (mouth).

A deep plane facelift hybrid, however, differs from both mini and traditional facelifts in that it involves releasing deep ligaments and resuturing these structures to achieve a more extensive revision of the facial tissues and fat pads. Deep plane facelift hybrids are longer, more technically complex surgeries, and offer more dramatic results.

Who Is a Candidate for a Mini Facelift?

Another key difference between a mini facelift and other types of facelifts is the ideal candidates for each. Because a mini facelift is a very focused procedure with a limited treatment area, candidates typically only need revision in this area. While the benefits of a shorter recovery time may be attractive, if you have a more significant facial revision, it’s often better to undergo a full facelift or a deep plane facelift hybrid rather than a mini facelift for the best outcome.

Ideal mini facelift candidates:

  • Have mild to moderate concerns
  • Exhibit skin laxity throughout the jawline, upper neck, and chin
  • Want a less invasive procedure for a select treatment area
  • Are healthy adults who are nonsmokers

Many patients want to know what age is best for getting the procedure. However, this is not a perfect indicator of candidacy; we all age at different rates, after all. With mini facelifts, it’s not uncommon for younger patients, in their mid-30s or so, to request the procedure, while full facelifts and more extensive procedures are more common among patients in their 50s and 60s. But again, this is because there is some correlation between early aging and the benefits of a mini facelift.

The best indicator of whether a procedure is right for you is your facial aging concerns. You’ll work with your plastic surgeon to determine which type of facelift will deliver the results you want and address your signs of aging and anatomy most successfully—no matter your age.

For example, some patients with great genes who protect their skin their whole lives might not need any revision until their 50s, and if they are not concerned about upper-face aging, a mini facelift may be ideal.

How Long Does a Mini Facelift Last?

As with all cosmetic procedures, a mini facelift cannot stop the natural aging process. But it’s a common misconception that mini facelifts don’t last as long as full facelifts or other procedures. When performed correctly by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, and when the patient cares for their skin and follows all recovery protocols, mini facelifts can last a decade or longer.

The lifespan of any cosmetic procedure varies depending on several factors, including the patient’s skin elasticity, whether they use adequate sun protection, whether they smoke or drink, and, again, genetics.

Will I need another procedure after my mini facelift?

When patients ask about the longevity of any procedure, it’s important for them to understand that the “shelf life” of their results depends partly on perspective and the age at which they had the procedure.

If you have your mini facelift in your mid-to-late 30s, you still have decades ahead of you, and your face will continue to age at its normal pace. You may want another procedure later in life; however, if you wait to have surgery, you may not. It comes down to your preferences and the way you wish to be perceived as you age.

Is a Mini Facelift Worth It?

For patients with mild to moderate facial aging and skin laxity around their jawline, chin, and upper neck, who desire a less invasive alternative to a full facelift, a mini facelift is absolutely worth it.

This procedure requires short incisions, a less intense recovery, and targeted treatment of common signs of aging, such as loose or heavy jowls. For patients looking to refresh their appearance with an elegant and sweeping neck and jawline without worrying about large scars, a mini facelift is often an excellent choice.
