The nose is the center point of the face so when patients are unhappy with its size or shape, it can cause them to feel dissatisfied with their overall appearance as well. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, can correct this problem by reshaping a nose that is disproportionate to the other facial features. Even subtle changes to the nose can have a dramatic impact on a patient’s appearance. Dr. Francis Johns is a facial plastic surgeon patients have trusted for years to deliver the aesthetic results they need to look and feel their best. Patients who pursue rhinoplasty include individuals who are unhappy with the size, shape or symmetry of their nose. It is also a common procedure among patients who have structural abnormalities and experience difficulty breathing. Typical rhinoplasty patients are those over the age of 15. It is important to note that the nose must be fully developed before any surgical procedure is performed. Patients who are interested in pursuing cosmetic nose surgery should not smoke, as smoking increases the risk of surgical complications. During a comprehensive consultation, Dr. Johns will evaluate a patient’s candidacy for the procedure, make recommendations for treatment and address any questions or concerns that may arise.
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic and functional procedure that offers a number of benefits, including:
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis at Artisan Plastic Surgery’s state-of-the-art surgical center in Greensburg, PA. The length of the procedure will vary based on the extent of changes being made. Rhinoplasty can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other procedures such as chin surgery or eyelid surgery. Dr. Johns can perform rhinoplasty using either the open or the closed technique, each of which has its own distinct benefits. During closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose and therefore do not leave any external scarring. During the open rhinoplasty procedure, an additional incision is made across the columella. Although this leaves a small scar under the nose, it is the preferred procedure when patients require extensive changes. This is because the additional incision gives Dr. Johns more access to the nasal bone and tissue.
After the incisions have been made, Dr. Johns makes any necessary adjustments to the nose, which may include removing and rearranging nasal tissue and/or altering the bone in the nose. Once this is complete he inserts a nasal splint to help retain the results of the procedure.
The recovery period for rhinoplasty will vary from patient to patient based on the extent of changes made to the nose. Most patients who undergo nose surgery in Pittsburgh will experience some minor discomfort, bruising and swelling in the days after surgery. Dr. Johns will prescribe medication to alleviate any of these symptoms and promote a safe and comfortable recovery period. Patients are encouraged to keep the head elevated as much as possible in the 48 hours after treatment. Nasal packing and splints will be removed about one week after surgery, at which time patients can return to work and other routine activities. More strenuous activities and content sports should be avoided for several weeks after treatment. Although some results from rhinoplasty surgery are apparent immediately, it can take up to a year for the nose to take its final form.
When performed by a skilled, board certified plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty can greatly enhance a patient’s appearance, self-confidence and quality of life. Over the years, Dr. Johns has produced beautiful, natural-looking results for many nose surgery patients.
